Local Authorities

Local Authorities are government organisations that are responsible for all the public services and facilities in a particular area.

With regards to water, local authorities have responsibility for checking the safety and sufficiency of all water supplies in their area. For public water supplies this means that local authorities must have effective working arrangements in place with all water companies and licensees who supply water in their area.

For private water supplies, local authorities carry out a risk assessment of each private water supply in their area (except for supplies to single non-commercial domestic dwellings). This assesses the potential danger to human health. Local authorities are also responsible for arranging that private water supplies in their area are monitored to determine compliance with the drinking water standards.
